Free Meals for All Students; Applications Still Needed
The Food and Nutrition Service program proudly offers healthy and delicious breakfast and lunch meals to our students every school day in all of our TCAPS buildings. Our children need these healthy meals to fuel their daily learning. We are pleased to announce that again this school year, all of our TCAPS students will receive free breakfast and free lunch each school day.
We will be offering a FREE BREAKFAST at every building right before the school day begins, served in the cafeteria or hallways. Please check with your school to be sure of the location of service for your building. We encourage all of our children to join us for this breakfast each day to ensure that they excel in their morning studies.
Even though all of our students will receive free meals, we kindly request that all TCAPS families please complete the CEP Education Benefits form.
This request is critical as the information obtained from these applications allows TCAPS to apply for grants and state and federal funds for programs that support all students. These programs are essential to TCAPS ability to continue offering all of our students a world-class education.

Sarah DeKett named 2025 Michigan Art Education Association's Middle Level Educator of the Year!
West Middle School educator Sarah DeKett has been named the 2025 Michigan Art Education Association's Middle Level Educator of the Year. Sarah is a dedicated art educator, maker, and creative visionary currently making an impact as a middle school art teacher. Sarah's students consistently produce award-winning artworks that captivate audiences at both local and state levels. Sarah is a recognized thought leader in the field of art education.

She has served as a presenter at state and national conferences, where she shares her insights and innovative approaches to teaching art and digital photography. Sarah continues to inspire and empower the next generation of artists, leaving an enduring legacy that transcends the confines of the classroom.

Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment
TCAPS and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) are assisting families with the new oral health regulations for incoming kindergarten students. Proof of dental check must be on file with the student’s school. TCAPS will offer MDHHS oral health checks to assist with this new requirement at school. Parents can learn more about the new requirement online.

School Safety Reminders
With the school year just around the corner, it's time to brush up on school safety tips! Michigan State Police share these essential bus stop tips:
- Pick a Safe Spot: Choose a safe waiting area away from traffic and streets.
- Buddy Up: Always walk to the bus stop with a friend or guardian.
- Stay Calm: Avoid running or playing while waiting for the bus.
- Stay Visible: Never go behind the bus and stay in the driver's view.
- Wait for the Signal: Don't board until the bus stops and the driver signals.
- Cross Safely: Follow traffic signals and crossing guards.
- Be Cautious: Don't talk to strangers, and let parents know if approached.
- Stay in Sight: Never enter a stranger's vehicle.
Motorists need to follow the state’s school bus stop laws:
- Yellow Lights: Slow down when the bus lights flash yellow. Prepare to stop.
- Red Lights: STOP! When red lights flash, stop at least 20 feet away.
- Hazard Lights: When hazard lights are flashing, proceed with caution.

Students who participated in the TCAPS Global Service trip to Guanajuato, Mexico spent time working with the girls at the Buen Pastor orphanage and helping with projects at Fundacion Corazon Animal Dog Refuge.

TBA Credit Union made a generous donation to support extracurricular activities and essential resources for students.
|
The TCAPS Enrollment Tour visited different locations around Traverse City to provide enrollment assistance, information about kindergarten, preschool, and early childhood programs, student supports, and community information.

Volunteers from Sunrise Rotary assembled and distributed 1,122 backpacks. Backpacks were filled with grade level appropriate school supplies.

Student Support Network (SSN)
The Student Support Network (SSN) is a program administered by Traverse City Area Public Schools that provides free supportive, educational-related services and non-academic support to help overcome obstacles that may create barriers to learning. If your student needs help, please contact SSN Coordinator at 231.933.1789 or complete the Student Support Network Request Form. Thank you to all of the generous community members and organizations that helped to make the SSN Back-to-School Pop-Up Shop a huge success for TCAPS families. Over 200 students had access to shop for free clothing, hygiene products/items, and school supplies. Special thanks to the staff of West Shore Bank for spending an entire day setting up our shop!

Thank you to our community partners for organizing school supply drives in support of the SSN. Items donated will be distributed to classrooms and individual students so they have the tools necessary for a successful school year! Pictured here is the supply drive recently hosted by the Cherryland Ghostbusters who collected over 700 items that were donated. Other community groups that participated in this drive include Gaming for a Cure, Cherry Capital Comic Con, NW Michigan Marines Toys for Tots, and Staples.
