Congratulaions Outstanding Educators

Northwest Education Services Outstanding Educators
Northwest Education Services, Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, and TBA Credit Union have announced the 2023 Outstanding Educator Award recipients, which included four honorees from TCAPS. These recipients received this honor for making exemplary contributions to the academic success of students, educational collaboration, and professional development.

Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association (MSBOA) Teacher of the Year 2022-2023 - District 2
Traverse City West Band Director, Chad Mielens, was selected as the MSBOA - District 2 Teacher of the Year for 2023. This honor is determined by a nomination-style application and is voted on as a District in the Spring.

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 20 to Watch Award
The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) announced the winners of the 2023 ISTE 20 to Watch Award which recognizes 20 up-and-coming individuals who have exemplified excellence through projects or artifacts that others can replicate. TCAPS Educational Technology Coach, Danelle Brostrom, was named one of the 20 recipients.

Readers Unite

Readers Unite

Readers from both middle schools competed in the 4th Annual Great Titan/Trojan Read Contests from mid-April through May 24th. Students and staff were encouraged to submit tickets for all books read (for the first time) during this time period. Collectively, 656 tickets were received and 317 readers participated. TCAPS Junior Kindergarten Now Districtwide

To provide equitable programming across the district, TCAPS has expanded the Junior Kindergarten program to all traditional elementary buildings. Some students may benefit academically or socially from the gift of a year of extra time prior to entering a traditional Kindergarten program. This program is the first year of a two-year Kindergarten experience. Families who have not yet registered for Kindergarten or Junior Kindergarten can begin the process online.

Additional P-EBT Benefits May Be Available for Free/Reduced Meal Students - Deadline to Act June 28th

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has partnered with the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) by creating the Pandemic-EBT (P-EBT) Program which provides supplemental food assistance benefits to students who have temporarily lost access to free or reduced-price school meals due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students at Willow Hill Elementary and Silver Lake Elementary received a special visit from the U.S. Coast Guard this month. Many thanks to Lieutenant Teddy Keenan, Lieutenant Leo Lake, Petty Officer Kyle Stalter, and Petty Officer Eric Baker for sharing your time with our students!

Butterfly House

Courtade Elementary School PTO sent Mrs. Sanders' first grade class to the G.T. Butterfly House & Bug Zoo! What a great experience for some of our youngest learners!

Montessori Ribbon Cutting

Thank you to everyone who attended the TCAPS Montessori ribbon cutting ceremony on June 6! It was a great success and we look forward to kicking off the 2023–2024 school year in the new building this fall.

Tea Party

Students in Mrs. Donahue's English as a Second Language class at West Middle School hosted a "My Story" Tea Party in which they invited staff to dine and read stories written by the class. Students did a beautiful job welcoming and hosting staff!

Field Day Fun

Students across the district celebrated the end of the school year with field days, school picnics, and other fun celebrations!

Field Trip

Blair Elementary and Long Lake 5th graders worked hard fundraising this year in order to travel to Mackinac Island for their end of the year field trip. It was a beautiful day on the island!

AP Government Trip

West Senior High School AP Government students visited the State Capitol in Lansing this month. Thank you to Governor Whitmer, Senator Damoose, Rep. Roth and Rep. Coffia for their hospitality! Thanks to Mr. Ready & Mrs. Paul for coordinating this experience.

Traverse City Horse Shows Donates $1,000 to Student Support Network

The Student Support Network thanks Traverse City Horse Shows for donating all proceeds from their general admission sales on June 11, 2023. Thank you to everyone who attended!

Sunshine Bus Summer Food Program Now Underway

TCAPS Student Support Network (SSN) has rolled out a summer food and basic needs program with eight weekly stops to provide free supplies and food for students. The bus is open for all children 18 and under. Route details and information is available online.

Food is provided by The Father Fred Foundation and basic needs are provided by TCAPS Student Support Network. If you have questions or are a student in need who cannot access these locations for assistance this summer, email kubeshca@tcaps.net or call 231.933.1789.
