Staff Appreciation Week May 8-12

In alignment with National Teacher Appreciation Week, Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education publicly acknowledges and recognizes all staff members of Traverse City Area Public Schools.

On behalf of our greater community, we acknowledge the dedication and commitment of all employees, who lead the daily operations of our district.

Schools are the hub of a community and TCAPS is no exception. Our community takes great pride in the ongoing successes of our students and all programming. Today, we honor all staff of Traverse City Area Public Schools who make our district a vibrant, safe, and rewarding place for children to learn and grow.

Submit a thank you for a special TCAPS staff member. Submissions due by May 8. Notes will be shared the week of May 8-12 at TCAPS.net.

TCAPS To Gather Input For Potential Bond Proposal

TCAPS families and the greater community are invited to attend one of multiple pre-bond information sessions held May 1 and 2 around the district. The session will provide an overview of the bond planning process and provide opportunities for feedback from participants through a Community Survey in preparation for a potential TCAPS bond proposal. TCAPS Receives AA- Financial Credit Rating from S&P Global

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) announced that Standard & Poors (S&P) Global Ratings assigned an ‘AA-’ rating with a stable outlook for $32 million series 2023-III general obligation (GO) school-building-and-site bonds. S&P Global Ratings also affirmed its 'AA-' rating on the district's existing GO debt. Read Full Article

TCAPS Receives Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting

The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) has awarded Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) its Certificate of Excellence (COE) in Financial Reporting for the fiscal year 2022. Read Full Article

Three TCAPS Staff Named 2022-2023 Outstanding Persons In Education

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) is pleased to announce three staff named as Outstanding Persons in Education (OPIE) by the Michigan Education Association (MEA) 15-A Union Coordinating Council. TCAPS award winners include Jill Jenkins, Administrative Lead at Eastern Elementary School, Mike Livengood, History Teacher at West Middle School, and Jennifer Taylor, Bus Aide, TCAPS Transportation Department. TCAPS Continues Tradition for Veterans to Receive High School Diploma

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) is pleased to continue the opportunity for Veterans to receive a diploma. Under Public Act 181 of 2001 and Public Act 55 of 2014, the Board of a Michigan school district can award high school diplomas to WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam Era Veterans in recognition of their service and sacrifice. The law permits WWII Veterans who left high school between December 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946 for immediate military service, and did not subsequently receive a high school degree, to now apply for a diploma. Korean War Veterans who left high school between June 27, 1950 and January 31, 1955 may also apply. Veterans of the Vietnam Era must have been drafted or enlisted between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975 to qualify for this diploma. Family members may apply on behalf of a living or deceased Veteran. For more information, please contact Erika Swartz at 231-933-1722.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel Visits TC West Middle School

Dana Nessel Visit

Traverse City West Middle School welcomed special guest Dana Nessel, Michigan Attorney General. Nessel’s visit was centered around the topic of school safety and security. Attorney General Nessel took time during her visit to speak with teachers and students and answer questions. Safety and security are important topics to all and we hope by sharing TCAPS initiatives we will help the ongoing conversations surrounding this critical topic at a state level and beyond.

Students Recognized for Outstanding Artwork

Congratulations to WSH Visual Arts students who were recognized for their outstanding artwork at the Traverse City Crooked Tree Arts Center Annual Youth Art Exhibition. Over $12,000 in Kendall College of Art and Design scholarships were awarded. Read Full Article and view the online flipbook.

TCAPS Announces Student Success at MSBOA State Solo and Ensemble

Students from Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) have received the following ratings as part of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) State Solo and Ensemble Festival held in Cadillac this month. Read Full Article

TC West Robotics Take on the World

WSH Robotics Worlds

Traverse City West Senior High Titan Robotics traveled to Houston, TX for the 2023 World Robotics Championship. The team competed against teams from Turkey, China, Japan and Israel. In the team's words, “Worlds was everything we expected and more, including a RoboProm!” The teams ended the weekend qualifying rounds with an 8-2 record and in 16th place out of 77. Though they were not get selected for an alliance in the divisional finals, they left Houston with many victories, new friends from all over the world, and a hunger to return next year. “We thank our parents, families, friends, teachers, our community, fellow teams in TC and in Michigan, sponsors, and mentors for all you’ve done to help us get this far. It really does take a village and we are glad you are ours.”

TADL Visit

Mrs. Agley and Mrs. Hickman's students from Blair Elementary went on a field trip to the Traverse Area District Library. Students learned all about the library and how to check out books! For some, it was their very first visit to the library.

Book Bingo

Throughout March, over 150 Central Grade students and their families participated in Book BINGO. This activity encouraged reading while participating in fun challenges. Each student who completed the Book BINGO board received a small prize and was entered into a drawing for a new book! Pictured is Finnegan Bauer with his new book. Way to go Superstar Readers!

Chicken Vessel

Congratulations to TC West Senior High student Evelyn Couturier, 10th grade, on her acceptance into the 2023 High School Ceramics Exhibition hosted by the American Museum of Ceramic Art located in California. Her wheel-thrown form, entitled Chicken Vessel, was one of 109 artworks juried into the show from over 520 entries nationwide. Evelyn has been a student in ceramics at TC West for approximately 1.5 years. Evelyn's artwork can be viewed at 12:43 of this virtual presentation https://youtu.be/FzcrjqgWrro

Congratulations to the staff of the CHS Black and Gold Quarterly for receiving awards from MSU's MIPA individual category contest for journalism. Liz Phillips and Liam Faunce placed third for Entertainment Layout, and the following students received honorable mentions for their stories and graphics: Kristen May, Eliana Hermel, Trinity Whiteford, and Shelbi Merchant. Well done, Trojan writers!

Into the Woods Board Meeting

TC Central student representatives for the musical Into the Woods were recognized for their hard work and talents at the April 10th Board of Education meeting.

Staples for donating many boxes of colored pencils, crayons and markers to support students in need!

Traverse City Optimist Club Youth Foundation for a $1,500 donation to assist with school stability, removing barriers, and supporting academic achievement, especially for children in residential transition.
