Board of Education Social Host Responsibility Resolution
At the April 8 Board of Education meeting, board members signed a resolution that Traverse City Area Public Schools, a community committed to the prevention of underage alcohol, tobacco, and/or recreational drug use, proclaimed April 2024 as Social Host Responsibility Month. Board members called upon all parents, family members, citizens, homeowners, and property owners to host gatherings responsibly and take measures to eliminate access to alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drugs to persons under the age of 21. Staff Appreciation Week May 6-10
In alignment with National Teacher Appreciation Week, Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education publicly acknowledges and recognizes all staff members of Traverse City Area Public Schools.
On behalf of our greater community, we acknowledge the dedication and commitment of all employees. Schools are the hub of a community and TCAPS is no exception. Our community takes great pride in the ongoing successes of our students and all programming. It is said it takes a village to raise a child, and today we honor all staff of Traverse City Area Public Schools who make our village a vibrant, safe, and rewarding place for children to learn and grow.

TCAPS Continues Tradition for Veterans to Receive High School Diploma
Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) is pleased to continue the opportunity for Veterans to receive a diploma. Under Public Act 181 of 2001 and Public Act 55 of 2014, the Board of a Michigan school district can award high school diplomas to WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam Era Veterans in recognition of their service and sacrifice. The law permits WWII Veterans who left high school between December 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946 for immediate military service, and did not subsequently receive a high school degree, to now apply for a diploma. Korean War Veterans who left high school between June 27, 1950 and January 31, 1955 may also apply. Veterans of the Vietnam Era must have been drafted or enlisted between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975 to qualify for this diploma. Family members may apply on behalf of a living or deceased Veteran. For more information, please contact Erika Swartz at 231-933-1722.

The Cherry Knoll Elementary School teams of “The Weading Wabbits'' and “Where the Wild Readers Are,” spent twelve weeks reading eight books for this year's Battle of the Books competition. The competition took place at Traverse City West Senior High School, where the two teams were challenged in book recall. Along with the competition, the teams met one of the books' authors Chris Grabenstein, and had a few moments to ask questions about the book. It was a fun-packed day!

Eastern and Central Grade Elementary students Isaac, Rob, Charlie, Lincoln, Max, and Graham also competed in the Grand Traverse Battle of the Books competition. Their team, Flamboyance of Flamingos, placed 2nd overall out of 57 teams.

The Central High School Quiz Bowl team finished 4th at the Michigan Class A State Quiz Bowl Championship. The team went 5-0 in the preliminary rounds. In the championship bracket, the Trojans battled to 2 victories to secure 4th place. Arthur Lijewski-Lee earned 2nd team All-State honors by having the 10th-highest scoring average. Jackson Price just missed All-State with the 14th-highest scoring average. Henry Sullivan, Evan Yenshaw, Helly Taylor, and Dawson Payne also made valuable contributions.

West Middle School students Isabelle Poole and Cicily Primo are moving on to Nationals in the junior group project category after competing in the National History Day State finals. In addition, Piper Leete will be representing West Middle School as a National finalist in the individual category. Lennon Bliss will serve as first alternate to Nationals in the individual documentary division.

TCAPS FIRST Robotics Teams, Raptors FRC Team 1711 and TC Titans FRC 3767, competed in the state finals at Saginaw Valley State University. TC Titans 3767 went on to compete in the World Robotics Championship in Houston, Texas. They visited NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where they met, competed, and learned new experiences with students from all over the world.

Student Support Network (SSN)
The Student Support Network (SSN) is a program administered by Traverse City Area Public Schools that provides free supportive, educational-related services and non-academic support to help overcome obstacles that may create barriers to learning for all students, ages 3-20. SSN provides backpacks, school supplies, personal hygiene items, clothing for school purposes; referrals for housing, medical and mental health needs, transitional living, and more. If your student(s) needs help overcoming obstacles, please contact SSN Coordinator at 231.933.1789 or complete the Student Support Network Request Form.
The Student Support Network is successfully removing barriers to learning thanks to community donations and programs. If you would like more information about SSN, or to donate, please visit www.tcaps.net/ssn.

SSN continues to add Caring Closets in all school buildings. Special thanks to Haley McDonald, SSN Specialist at West Senior High and Central High School, and Amber Ochoa, SSN Specialist at TC High for their work and dedication in making the high school pantries welcoming and easy for students to “shop” for their needs!

TCAPS Student Health Center Accepting New Patients
The TCAPS Student Health Center (a Northwest Michigan Health Services, Inc. clinic) is located on the West Middle School campus and open Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. year-round. The center is accepting new patients for behavioral health and medical services. All TCAPS students ages 3-21 are welcome, regardless of ability to pay. All insurances are accepted along with a sliding fee scale, and insurance enrollment assistance. Please see the TCAPS FAQ handout for a refresher of their services and commonly asked questions!
The Student Health Center is also excited to add two new faces to the clinic as of April. Kailey Kanaziz, AmeriCorps Volunteer/Community Health Worker (CHW), and Stacy O’Donnell, Clinic Director at NMHSI’s Traverse City location who will now be overseeing the Student Health Center. As a CHW, Kailey helps connect families to resources to overcome social barriers to health and can assist with health insurance enrollment. They are looking forward to joining Erika Spaulding, Behavioral Health Therapist, and Hannah Wilson, Physician Assistant, in supporting the health and wellbeing of the TCAPS school community!
